You Read These With Your Eyes! | May 29th, 2013
Every week, Comics! The Blog goes through the list of new releases and we tell you which comics to plug into your mindhole. Your mileage may vary.
ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #1 - PRINT EDITION (DC Comics)
We’ve been going on and on about how the brand new digital first Adventures of Superman series has been amazing so far (this week’s digital offering features a story by Joshua Hale Fialkov with art from C!TB favourite Joëlle Jones), and now, you can get the first three stories in print! I know there’s still a lot of people out there who still prefer print to digital, and of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s still something wonderful about being able to hold the comic you’re reading that adds to the experience - and I would probably say that the second story in this issue (done by Jeff Lemire) is one suited to a more tactile experience. It’s a story about a couple of kids who are essentially playing Superman vs. Bad Guys in a feild, and… I dunno. It just feels like a story that would benifit from being able to hold the comic like a memory. Which is why I’ll be picking up a copy of this issue for sure.
MORNING GLORIES #27 (Image Comics)
Season two starts with a bang after the prelude issue! When you’re hitting the shops this week looking for copies of this book, you might find yourself stuck with a tough choice. This issue features no less than eight regular covers from artists such as Joe Eisma, Emma Rios, Jamie McKelvie, Jenny Frison, Rob Guillory, Nick Pitarra, Christian Ward, and Shawn Martinbrough. Which is to say, you’ll want several of these. Will you just buy them all? Or maybe you’ll just tough it out and buy one? The choice is yours, tough as it will be.
Oh and also, the story will be fantastic, but that’s really old news at this point, right?
SILENCE & COMPANY GN
This week, a new graphic novel is hitting the stands from a brand new company and some brand new creators.
Silence & Company is a black and white crime story about a hitman who joins the afformentioned Silence & Co. organized crime group, only to find that things aren’t entirely as they seem. In short measure, he’s on the run himself and, uh… things happen. It’s a great read that costs a scant $9.99 for it’s 176 pages. If you want to know more about the series, head over to their website where you can find the first 88 pages of story for FREE.
WAKE #1 (DC/Vertigo)
The powers of Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy combine to bring you a deeply distrubed look at the future… with land dolphins!
Okay, maybe the part about land dolphins isn’t as relevant to the plot, which sounds like what Grant Morrison’s Sea Guy (which in turn was kind of like Grant Morrison’s Waterworld) meets… uh… Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy? That’s a terrible description, but this is a series that really can and should be sold on the shoulders of the creators attached. If a fun and scary post-apocalypse water world is something that scratches one of your various itches, pick this up.
X-MEN #1 (Marvel Comics)
Finally!
This comic was supposed to ship in April - not that I can fault the delay, what with it coinciding with a family tragedy in the life of writer Brian Wood - and now, it’s finally arrived. While at first blush it seems like there are more than enough X-books on the stands already, this one is set to cover an often overlooked section of the team. The main cast of this book is entirely female, and probably one of the most marketable books Marvel has coming out this month. Generally, those are two thoughts that don’t go together, but Marvel seems to be going full steam ahead with an attempt to crush the self-fulfilling prophecy of female leads not selling books. There is no good reason as to why a book like this hasn’t hit the stands before today, nor is there a good reason why it shouldn’t have lit up the charts. The only reason something like this hasn’t really occured before is the fact that the big two comic book companies exist as strong markets for the young male market, and their parent companies don’t really want to be bothered with these brands creating in-roads to markets they’ve already purchased elsewhere.
By putting two of their biggest creators (Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel) on this book, and giving it an extremely marketable name and hook, Marvel is pushing a lot of steam behind a series that will hopefully change the tides ever so slightly in order to make the market a bit more accepting of books such as these. Here’s hoping it sticks around for quite some time.
These are some of the many great books being released this week! You can find the full list of comics being released here. If you have any other recommendations, let us know in the comments below.
