You Read These With Your Eyes! // January 8th, 2014
Every week, Comics! The Blog goes through the list of new releases and we tell you which comics to plug into your mindhole. Your mileage may vary.
BLACK WIDOW #1 (Marvel Comics)
Shup up. Shut up and stop everything that you’re doing and go and buy this comic. Buy it. Buy it now.
…have… have you done it yet? Look, here’s the deal. Black Widow #1 is probably one of the best series launches Marvel has put out since Hawkeye #1 hit so hard all those months ago. In a way, it had to be. In order to get a title featuring a (for lack of a better term) non-headline character to stick, you have to put your best foot forward with that first issue, and lay all of your cards on the table. You have to offer something cool and unique that can’t be acquired elsewhere. Nathan Edmonson hits the ground running with a story that’s not only compelling, but gets across what this series will be within an incredibly short span of time. It will be slick, it will lie to you, and it will make you feel for the supposedly unfeeling main character. Paired with Phil Noto’s amazingly stylish art, this book make espionage cool again in a way James Bond wishes he could match, free of gratuitous butt and boob shots. If only more comics were like this.
ALL THE SEX CRIMS (Image Comics)
Are you behind on Time Magazine’s Best Comic of the Year? It’s okay if you are - demand spiked quite high after that award came down and maintained through the holiday season as more and more people and organizations added it to their own Best lists. That all said, this week you’re in luck: each and every issue of Sex Criminals is back in print, along with the fourth issue, which hits the stands this week. Marvel at the swag majesty of the first issue’s fourth printing, which features creators Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky taking an awkward family photo with their creation! Wallow in the depraved sweetness contained within! Get yourself hooked on some strange today, and come home with an armful of Sex Criminals today!
REVOLUTIONARY WAR: ALPHA (Marvel Comics)
Marvel brings a bunch of their UK characters back to life in this new eight issue series, which will run through several different one shots over the next few months. I’m pretty excited for this series, despite the fact that I have no idea who most of these characters are. The only one I really know with any depth is Death’s Head, and that’s down to Kieron Gillen featuring him in a small handful of titles over the years.
The series is being masterminded by Dan Abnett who Marvel fans know from books like New Mutants and the previous incarnation of Marvel’s cosmic line. Lately, I’ve grown to know him better as the mastermind of several fantastic 2000AD serials, including Sinister Dexter.
The line of one-shots features quite a few different 2000AD talent, as well as Gillen, which means that the quality of this series should be quite high. I can’t wait to see where this goes. Regardless, it should be interesting to read.
YOUNG AVENGERS #15 (Marvel Comics)
ALL NEW MARVEL NOW POINT ONE (Marvel Comics)
A bit heavy on the Marvel this week, yeah? Whelp, to be fair, it’s because they’re putting out a lot of amazing content this week. I haven’t even gotten to All New X-Factor (a strong new take on a superhero team run by a corporation), Avengers World (Nick Spencer and Jonathan Hickman begin the second phase of Hickman’s Avengers run) or Deadpool: The Gauntlet (a new Infinite Comic from the regular Deadpool writing team) - all of which you should also check out if they sound interesting to you.
The big Point One concept returns with another one shot showcasing several of the new series Marvel has coming out soon. Encased in a story about Loki by Al Ewing and Lee Garbett, the book serves up all new stories featuring Black Widow and the new Ms. Marvel, as well as touching on the upcoming All New Invaders series, and Avengers World. It’s a tasty smorgasbord of things to taste, one that will leave you champing at the bit for more. Marvel has done a fantastic job with their line over the past several years, and if this book is any indication, the next batch of launches will serve readers quite well. Check it out on the stands when you get the chance.
These are some of the many great books being released this week! You can find the full list of comics being released here. If you have any other recommendations, let us know in the comments below.
