You Read These With Your Eyes! // November 6th, 2013
Every week, Comics! The Blog goes through the list of new releases and we tell you which comics to plug into your mindhole. Your mileage may vary.
AMAZING X-MEN #1 (Marvel Comics)
Adjectives, ahoy!
Now that the prerequisite “ha ha Marvel loves their descriptors” joke is out of the way, let’s get to the nutmeat, shall we? Jason Aaron is launching a brand new X-Men title this week along with the incredible Ed McGuinness. The book will feature the return of Nightcrawler to the comic’s page, as well as a culmination of stories Aaron has been working on since his days on Wolverine. Thematically, it’s going to continue the writer’s through-line of dealing with deities and the notion of an afterlife in the Marvel Universe. It’s also going to touch upon just what the hell those Bamfs are, and what they’ve been up to since Wolverine opened his school. All that and COMEDY! TRAGEDY! Amazing Ed McGuiness art! How can you go wrong?
CAPTAIN MARVEL #17 (Marvel Comics)
And so the first volume of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run on Captain Marvel comes to an end with an extra sized issue. This series has been a wonderful surprise, both in terms of fan response, and content. While I was sure I was going to enjoy this series based off of DeConnick’s past work, I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I had. It will be a shame to see this series disappear for a few months, but a joy to see it return in March, rather than disappearing off into the ether, never to be seen again. If you want to know what the series was like, you can definitely pop into this last issue, which functions as a done-in-one story that is quite new readers friendly, despite being the end of a run.
DRUMHELLAR #1 (Image Comics)
Riley Rossmo makes a long awaited return to comics with his Rebel Blood partner in crime, Alex Link for a new series. Originally solicited under the name “Strangeways” (a name already in use in the medium), this series features a paranormal detective whose strange visions send him to a small town in South Dakota filled with all sorts of goonies… and his ex-girlfriend. This is the kind of strange story Rossmo is known for murdering (in a good way) with his evocative art style, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us this time.
LEGENDS OF RED SONJA #1 (Dynamite Comics)
Gail Simone’s influence over Red Sonja grows with this interesting anthology series. In addition to having a short story of her own in this first issue, she’s put together a team of amazing female creators who will be creating a myriad of different tales starring the crimson-haired warrior. This first issue sees Devin Grayson return to the medium for the first time in quite a while, paired with Carla Speed McNeil - which should be amazing. This should be quite the read.
Briefly:
MIGHTY AVENGERS #3 (Marvel Comics)
If you want to jump onto the best Avengers book on the market these days, grab this book. Now. Not only does it feature some fantastic anti-team teamwork, but it builds to a climax that results in my platonic ideal for an Avengers book. You’ll know it when you see it. That is all.
ACTION COMICS #25 (DC Comics)
Worth a mention - Greg Pak is taking over Action Comics as the book’s first proper ongoing writer since Grant Morrison’s run ended almost six months ago. I love Pak, and I want to love a Superman book, so I’m trying this out this week. Keep glued to our site, or our twitter to find out how things went.
These are some of the many great books being released this week! You can find the full list of comics being released here. If you have any other recommendations, let us know in the comments below.
