C!TB’s Inarguable Awards, 2013 // Best Pre-Apocalyptic Time Travelling Bunker

C!TB’s Inarguable Awards

The Objective Best of 2013

by Brandon “Grape Victim” Schatz and James “Grape Jokes Aren’t Funny” Leask

What a year, huh? Obama, amirite?

This time of year, the internet is awash with best-of-the-year lists, and they all (mostly) suffer from one fatal flaw: they are terribly, inescapably subjective. Was Sex Criminals really the best comic of the year Time Magazine? Well… yeah, it certainly was, but… that’s not the point. The point is, if you’re going to use broad enough topics, the internet will get mad at you for being wrong. Sidestepping that, we’ve come up with our own award system, with categories so specific our choices can’t help being objectly correct. Prepare yourself, gently used readers, for the Inarguable Best of 2013!

Our sixth award of the year is for…

Best Pre-Apocalyptic Time Travelling Bunker:

The Bunker (From The Bunker)

Sometimes, when you’re hanging out with your friends, you accidentally stumble across a bunker that contains messages from yourselves in the somewhat distant, ever darkening future.

When The Bunker first arrived at ComiXology, I was pretty jazzed. While he’s now known for more of his DC and Marvel wor, Joshua Hale Fialkov is a writer of some of the most intense comics I’ve ever read, from Elk’s Run, to Tumor, to Echoes and more. His return to his very own Hoarse and Buggy Productions company heralded a return to this kind of storytelling, and The Bunker is certainly a worthy addition to his work in thie vein.

What’s more, is this time he’s partnered himself with Joe Infurnari whose beautiful artwork and design sense has elevated every project he’s worked on to impossibly great heights. Working together, the pair offer a compelling story about a group of friends who are torn apart by what they might be responsible for in the future. Their very human reactions to this extravigant set of circumstances has made this one of my most anticipated monthly reads. You can buy the series right now on ComiXology, or you can wait for the series’ return in February through Oni Press, where it will re-start and continue as a full colour print comic. The kind folks at Oni were gracious enough to provide retailers a first look at the finished first issue, and I have to say, the creative team has done a great job translating the series to a different medium, the half-pages of the digital screens altered to allow the reading experience to happen fresh once more, in a great new format. The Bunker was one of the best from last year, and it’s sure to be one of the best from the next. Don’t miss out on it.

Tune in every weekday until January 1st for more Inarguable Awards, and make sure you’re caught up on the previous awards of the year:
