You Read These With Your Eyes! - November 9th, 2011
Every week, Comics! The Blog goes through the list of new releases and we tell you which comics to plug into your mind hole. Your mileage may vary.
VICTOR VON DOOM #1 (Marvel Comics)
shut up we’re not crying you’re crying you jerks
VERTIGO RESURRECTED MY FAITH IN FRANKIE #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics)
Ahem. See? No tears. We’re big boys, just like mom and dad.
Speaking of interesting relationships, this week you can get your hands on My Faith in Frankie this week, in a format that’s not super tiny and converted into black and white. While I understand why Vertigo attempted to publish the collection of this four issue mini in that fashion (manga boom, anyone?) it certainly didn’t do the art or lettering any justice. Not when it had to be shrunk down and de-coloured like that.
Anyway, this series follows a girl named Frankie, and her guardian angel. The story takes a decidedly Vertigo turn when her guardian develops quite a jealous streak when Frankie turns her attention towards a dude. Things get crazy and feelings get hurt and the whole thing ends up being a pretty amazing read. Get it this week for a scant 8 dollars!
REED GUNTHER VOL. 01 (Image Comics)
If you’re looking for a good all ages book to share with your kids - or just enjoy on your own - you should go out and grab a copy of Reed Gunther this week. It’s a fun adventure series that follows a cowboy, and his best friend, who is a grizzly bear that he rides named Sterling. In the first issue, they fight giant snakes and through out the series, they start dealing with such crazy things like railroad mummies that are made out of pieces of railroad. Honestly, its some of the most fun I’ve had reading a comic, and it needs to sell a whole heck of a lot better than it is, so that we can get more great all ages content out there. Do your part!
POINT ONE (Marvel)
Marvel’s not screwing around with this one. When they say it’s big, they mean it. They’re tossing pretty much every big writer and artist they have at this book, including Fraction, Dodson, Loeb, McGuinness, Bendis, Hitch, Lapham, Yost and a whole hell of a lot more, as they prime everyone for big things to come in the new year. It’s an 80 page book that Marvel has seen fit to double orders on, so if your local comic shop is trying to sell it to you at the $7.99 cover price, tell them where to shove it. We’ll be giving it away for half price, plus the regular file discount. Because why not?
ALL NEW BATMAN: BRAVE AND THE BOLD #13 (DC Comics)
This issue has all the Robins in it. And when I say all the Robins, I mean that literally.
If that didn’t just sell you a comic, then we really can never be friends, can we.
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST: COMEDY OF DEATH TP (Marvel Comics)
It’s been a rough week for impending books that would’ve been rad. As we alluded to before, Victor Von Doom by Nick Spencer and Becky Cloonan was cancelled on Friday - and yesterday, news hit that Fred Van Lente and Kyle Hotz’ Destroyers mini would be doomed to life as a drawer comic as well.
And it was a book that was going to feature these motherfuckers:
Yeah, that’s a book that would’ve had Devil Dinosaur in it.
Anyway, much like we are attempting to drown our sorrows in goodness with other books by Nick Spencer and Becky Cloonan, I suggest that you drown you Destroyers sorrows by grabbing this fantastic collection. It features the new Power Man that Fred Van Lente introduced to the world during Shadowland, and teams him up with Iron Fist. Also, they fight a villain named Pokerface, who is literally a dude that has a poker through his face.
So there’s that. Which is nice.
What the hell are you still reading this for! Go out! Buy! Pre-order! Whatever! Go go!
These are just five of the many great books being released this week! You can find the full list of comics being released here. If you have any other recommendations, let us know in the comments below.
